Co-creating Peer-learning at Beaconhouse

Leadership must grow from within
Leadership development in education cannot be borrowed from corporate playbooks! It must grow from within, from the people, values, and vision that define an institution.
For over four decades, Beaconhouse School System has embodied this belief, cultivating leadership from within its own ecosystem. Its school heads and educators have long carried forward a tradition of mentorship, reflection, and shared purpose, qualities that form the foundation of any sustainable leadership culture.
From June 16th to 19th, 2025, this philosophy came alive in BLISS – Beaconhouse Leadership Immersive Simulation Series workshop, a peer-learning initiative co-created by MILLS™ in partnership with Beaconhouse’s leadership team. The four-day immersive workshop invited 30 School Heads to explore leadership through reflection, collaboration, and context, balancing academic stewardship with operational excellence while connecting personal, professional, and purposeful dimensions of leadership.
At MILLS™, we have been studying Pakistan’s unique social and cultural conditioning through a leadership lens for over a decade. Our work with BLISS continues that journey, designing and testing blended learning tools that are shaped by our own unique-to-Pakistan values, experiences, and evolving socio-cultural construct. At the heart of this collaboration is a simple belief:
‘every organization deserves a learning platform that grows from within its own context and culture, yet remains grounded in the ever-evolving social and cultural construct.’

BLISS – Beaconhouse Leadership Immersive Simulation Series
BLISS is one such initiative we co-created with Beaconhouse, sponsored by its leadership team. During the initial design stage, our intent was not to conduct another workshop, but to build an integrated leadership development platform, one that could leverage peer learning with blended tools to help School Heads balance academic stewardship with operational excellence, connecting personal, professional, and purposeful dimensions of leadership.
Integrated Design – BLISS Leadership Platform
The design phase began with generating insights through in-depth interviews across Beaconhouse’s leadership team, helping translate lived school-level challenges into meaningful workshop design, which promised to capture ‘school at the center‘ philosophy. From these insights, BLISS took shape around four interconnected pillars:
- Tarbiyah Curriculum: grounding leadership in Virtuous Leadership, linking self, social, and God-consciousness, and introducing behavioural competencies through purposeful activities, from individual reflection to group discussions.
- Experiential Pedagogy: using LEGO® Serious Fun to create a shared bond and unified language within the cohort. And then leveraging that toward LEGO® Serious Play™ to surface team perspectives, empathy, and collective reflection.
- Online Profiling Tools: combining CLI (Contextual Leadership Inventory) to plot leadership styles, and LSI (Learning Skills Inventory) to map communication (shared vision) and collaboration (committed consensus) through self and peer-evaluations.
- Case-based Simulation: introducing SimuLead™, a simulation tool built specifically for BLISS, to mirror real school operations and decision-making impact through measurable KPIs.
The Pilot Workshop was held at Karachi, South Region from 16th till 19th June 2025, where these ideas came alive. Over four days, School Heads immersed themselves in reflection, dialogue, and data-driven learning, exploring how leadership can be both mindful and measurable.

Workshop Feedback – BLISS Leadership Platform
Participant feedback was deeply affirming, reinforcing BLISS’s design philosophy while offering valuable fine-tuning opportunities for future workshops. Some of the key reflections shared included:
- LEGO® pedagogy created a shared language and strengthened team bonding, while helping surface individual perspectives in a more engaging and accepting manner.
- Tarbiyah Curriculum and Virtuous Leadership lens reminded participants that character and consciousness are inseparable from competence.
- CLI and LSI tools helped leaders see how self-perception aligns with how others experience their leadership.
- SimuLead™ connected school-level decisions with system-wide performance.

I am deeply grateful to Mr. Ahsan Afzaal, Regional Director South who generously offered the first cohort for this pilot, where these ideas took shape. My heartfelt thanks to Ms. Aymen Abdullah, DGM HR Operations, for sponsoring and championing this initiative, and to the entire Beaconhouse Leadership Team for continuing to create space for learning and development platforms to evolve into a shared purpose.
And most of all, I am grateful to all School Heads for their passionate and courageous participation to explore BLISS as a peer-learning platform. Their authentic conversations and dialogues gave life to the idea of Virtuous Leadership. And helped improve awareness around change grounded in reflection (self-consciousness), servitude in humility (social-consciousness) and a higher purpose (God-consciousness).
May reflection guide our purpose, and service give it meaning. Ameen
